The MultiEthnic Parent Association of Nicolet High School (MEPA) is an advocacy group whose purpose is to promote academic achievement, problem solving, maturity, opportunity and success among Nicolet High School’s multiethnic student population by serving as a communication vehicle between staff, students and parents. It addresses the academic, social and cultural needs of multiethnic students at Nicolet that may go beyond what the school provides for the student body in general and supports efforts by Nicolet to enhance cultural sensitivity and human relations in the school community.
Issues of current interest and concern for MEPA includes trends in student disciplinary actions, academic placement and tracking and the associated appeals process, and the employment and retention of qualified minority teachers for the benefit of all students. MEPA has supported the AVID, Alternative Educations, Chapter 220, and Black History programs and Nicolet’s participation in the American Civil Liberties Union’s The Other America Tour. We continue to explore ways of addressing the diversity and equity raised in a MEPA-designed school climate survey of students and faculty. For the 2011 – 2012 school year, we are planning a monthly speaker’s series, two college tours, and implementation of the Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP).
Membership fees, payable with other parent organization fees at the time of registration, have made it possible for us to sponsor our annual MEPA Senior Awards Program at which outstanding students are presented scholarships.
We would like to extend an invitation to all interested parents, students, faculty and administrative personnel to attend our meetings. MEPA meets every fourth Wednesday of each month from September through May, except November 2011 when the meeting is scheduled for the third Wednesday, and no meeting is scheduled in December. The dates for all 2011 – 2012 meetings are listed below. We welcome your participation!
