Nicolet Freshmen Veena Langewisch and Ellie Wauters competed at the National History Day finals at the University of Maryland. Veena presented her website "The Sri Lankan Ethnic Conflict: Ethnocentrism as the Catalyst for Sectarian Polarization and an Unjust War," while Ellie presented her exhibit "Women's Struggle for Rights during the French Revolution." Both projects originated from their Global Studies course, where students research self-selected historical topics using the National History Day format. Motivated students can advance through regional (UW-Milwaukee) and state (UW-Madison) competitions. Competitors present to judges who evaluate their research process, thesis, historical questions, and primary source usage. This marks Nicolet's second consecutive year with national qualifiers. Last year, Annele Kaugars (website "Leveling the Playing Field: Progress and Challenges in Title IX and Women in College Sports") and Victoria Walker (exhibit "United Daughters of the Confederacy: A Purposefully Misinformed South") reached nationals. Coach Tim Koppa has been coaching boys and girls tennis at Nicolet for the past 31 year and just recently retired as a wellness teacher.
